Just about everyone has a usb flash drive by now. Apart from all that data you’re packing (which you no doubt have encrypted in case your drive gets lost — but that’s a post for another day), why not pack up your favorite web browser and take it along for the ride.

While working at clients place you are usually provided with computer with no administrator rights. It is very annoying when you find that softwares can be downloaded via internet but cannot be installed. I find working with firefox browser much easier than with other web browsers. Some are comfortable working with Google Chrome, Opera, IE, et cetera. But web browser is installed other than of your choice then what to do? You cannot install web browser of your choice because you don’t have admin rights to do so. Here portable web browsers will come to your rescue. Just carry the portable browsers in your USB drive.

When you plug in your USB flash drive, portable hard drive, iPod or other portable, you have access to your software and personal data like your own personal computer. And when you unplug the device, none of your personal data is left behind on client’s computer. You can easily carry your favorite web browser with all your favorite bookmarks and softwares of your choice with your USB drive.

Choose yours !!

Some Cool Portable web browsers.

After all the cases on Google buzz , regarding its privacy issues Google have finally came to an agreement . Google is creating an $8.5 million fund, mainly to go to Internet privacy and policy organizations. This is what Google had to say in its informative email to every Gmail user.

Google rarely contacts Gmail users via email, but we are making an exception to let you know that we’ve reached a settlement in a lawsuit regarding Google Buzz (http://buzz.google.com), a service we launched within Gmail in February of this year.

Shortly after its launch, we heard from a number of people who were concerned about privacy. In addition, we were sued by a group of Buzz users and recently reached a settlement in this case.

The settlement acknowledges that we quickly changed the service to address users’ concerns. In addition, Google has committed $8.5 million to an independent fund, most of which will support organizations promoting privacy education and policy on the web. We will also do more to educate people about privacy controls specific to Buzz. The more people know about privacy online, the better their online experience will be.

Just to be clear, this is not a settlement in which people who use Gmail can file to receive compensation. Everyone in the U.S. who uses Gmail is included in the settlement, unless you personally decide to opt out before December 6, 2010. The Court will consider final approval of the agreement on January 31, 2011. This email is a summary of the settlement, and more detailed information and instructions approved by the court, including instructions about how to opt out, object, or comment, are available at http://www.BuzzClassAction.com

The internet, is not a perfectlly safe place to visit.Whenever a network is connected to the internet it faces potential danger and is vunerable to attack.

This can lead to damage of important data ,or the whole network. So the solution isn’t to cut off the network from internet, Instead we can build firewalls to protect the network.

A firewall is a software running on another computer. which inspects the network traffic through it, and denies or permits pasage based on a set of rules. A firewall’s basic task is to regulate some of the flow of traffic between computer networks.

A firewall can be implemented both in hardware and software, or a combination of both. Firewalls are frequently used to prevent unauthorized internet users from accessing private networks connected to the internet, especially intranets. All messages entering or leaving the intranet pass through the firewall, which examines each message and blocks those that do not meet the specifies security criteria.

There are several types of firewall techniques:

Packet filter: It looks at each packet entering or leaving the network and accepts or rejects it based on user-defined rules.

Application gateway: It applies security mechanisms to specific applications such as Telnet servers.

Circuit-level gateway: It applies security mechanisms when a TCP or UDP connection is established.Once the connection is made, packets can flow between the hosts without further checking.

Proxy server: The proxy server is a application program which services the requests of the clients by forwarding requests to other servers. The proxy server hides the true network address.

Microsoft could regain the edge over rivals Google and Mozilla Firefox with its new Web browser due to be launched next year. IE9 is months from release, but already it holds the potential to alter the browser market. Not only could it reinvigorate competition with a host of new rivals, it could help usher in the cloud computing era that some of those rivals are eager to embrace. In that era, the Web transforms from a foundation for static documents and Web sites into a foundation for interactive programs.

With IE9, though, Microsoft is trying to rebuild the browser for the Web that’s to come through new standards such as HTML5 and CSS3, updates to Hypertext Markup Language for describing Web pages and Cascading Style Sheets for formatting.

1st developer preview of IE9 was launched on March 16, 2010.

The preview is bare bones and doesn’t have much in terms of user interface. Still, it provides a good glimpse into what we can expect from IE9: a complete reboot. It supports HTML5, the new version of the mark-up language that supports more dynamic webpages, video embedding, and geolocation. Microsoft also focused on adhering to web standards. IE9’s Acid3 test — a measure of how well a web browser follows certain web standards — achieves a score of 55/100. Microsoft also shows off its improved compliance with CSS, including rounded corners (if you’ve ever developed for previous version of IE, this is definitely a sore spot). Microsoft also seems intent on being compatible with CSS3, which is currently under development. However, IE9 will not support Windows XP. But it could prove to be a smart move, as it might help push more people to upgrade to Windows 7.

May 5 2010: 2nd developer preview of IE9 released.

The new preview offers a higher ACID 3 test score, 68 out of 100, and there’s a 117-millisecond improvement in speed according to Webkit.org’s SunSpider benchmark tests. Microsoft didn’t provide exact numbers for context.

Webkit.org's SunSpider Performance Update

Microsoft promised improved performance and graphics support, and the company said it’s been working closely with standards bodies. It submitted 79 new tests to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) responsible for HTML 5 compliance, bringing the total to 183.

The 2nd release builds on the first Platform Preview, delivering improvements to IE9’s performance, support for standards, and hardware acceleration of HTML5.

Another headline element for IE9 is a new JavaScript engine. When it comes to these engines for running Web-based programs, Chrome has V8, Opera 10.5 has Carakan, Safari has Nitro, and Firefox has the new JaegerMonkey.

Now Internet Explorer has its own new name for a JavaScript Engine: Chakra. One big change in the JavaScript engine is its multicore support. As soon as a Web page is loaded, Chakra assigns a processing core to the task of compiling JavaScript in the background into fast code written in the native language of the computer’s processor.

Microsoft has also updated the test drive site with a new set of developer samples to show what developers can do with GPU-powered HTML5. As part of its commitment to enabling developers to use the Same Markup – the same HTML, CSS, and script – on the web, it has contributed many new tests to the W3C for HTML5, as well as CSS3 Media Queries and DOM. The Developer Tools in this preview include some new features to make finding and fixing markup issues easier.

The IE9 Platform Preview itself is a change, too. Previously, Microsoft delivered a more finished product to the world. Now it’s trying to get feedback at an earlier stage of development. And it’s explicitly seeking comment on a wide range of elements.

The platform preview installs side by side with Internet Explorer 8 so that you can try it without replacing the full IE that comes with Windows. This second release of the Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview will install over the first version. There is no need to uninstall the first Preview before installing second. You’ll also find more information on what’s included in this release of the Platform Preview in the Release Notes, including known and resolved issues.

You can download the 2nd developer preview from here.

Visual Studio 2010 (currently in beta) includes an "InstallShield 2010" project template in the "Setup and Deployment" category. Back then the link didn’t work, but now it’s live. From the "InstallShield Limited Edition for Microsoft Visual Studio 2010" page you can now download a setup package. Registration is required before you can start the download, and my standard Flexera privacy caveat applies: Anyone who knows your e-mail address can retrieve the other information you entered in this form, like your real name, phone number, company name, city and country.

According to the download page: "InstallShield Limited Edition for Visual Studio 2010 replaces the functionality provided by the Visual Studio Installer tool. It provides a subset of the world-class functionality found in our more advanced InstallShield editions.". Note that installing InstallShield LE doesn’t remove the Visual Studio Installer (VSI) project type, but it offers an alternative.

Now the interesting question is what subset of the full InstallShield functionality is included in the Limited Edition, and what has been removed? I haven’t seen this officially documented, so here are the most notable differences I found so far. (In this screen shot of Solution Explorer you can see the disabled views marked with a lock symbol)

You are limited to one InstallShield project type, probably the equivalent to "Basic MSI". Other project types like Merge Module, InstallScript or Smart Device are not included.

You cannot customize the Feature structure of your setup. So you are limited to one feature, similar to VSI.

There are no localization options. Multi language setups are only supported in the Premier edition of InstallShield.

Text File Changes and XML File Changes views are disabled.

SQL Scripts and COM registration are unavailable.

Billboards and Support Files can’t be specified.

Dependency Scanners are not included (but it’s always better to know your runtime dependencies than having a machine trying to guess)

The Patch Design view is also been locked.

While some more important and some less important functionality has been disabled in the Limited Edition, InstallShield LE still offers some advantages compared to Visual Studio Installer:

Prerequiste installation to pre-install packages like the .NET Framework or Internet Explorer 8.

INI File Changes and Environment Variables views.

IIS configuration view.

More dialogs to chose from, but only limited customization options (similar to InstallShield Express).

Slightly more custom action scheduling options, but by far not equivalent to the full InstallShield version. Essentially you can call a custom action at the beginning or at the end of the UI sequence, or in the Execute sequence after RegisterProduct. In VSI you can’t insert custom actions in the UI sequence at all.

More customization options for Major Upgrades (in the "Upgrade Paths" view)

Along with the numerous announcements about the new Bing features revealed this week, the team also launched an updated web browser toolbar called the “Bing Bar.” Designed to replace the older MSN toolbar, this browser add-on built with Silverlight technology works in both Internet Explorer and Firefox.

As with the MSN toolbar, the new Bing Bar features a web search box, except now it’s powered by Bing Search Assist instead of Live.com. This feature provides search suggestions and image suggestions as you type in text. It can also tap into your search history to suggest previous queries you had entered before.

Another very cool feature is the toolbar’s ability to send you breaking news alerts, tailored to your preferences. Using the “Browse Plus” feature, as it’s called, you can configure the toolbar to watch for certain topics – like stock alerts, for example.

The “no-fail cash detector” helps you save money when shopping online by doing comparative searches for the product you’re viewing to see if another merchant has a better price or if you could get a deal via Bing Cashback.

Other buttons provide one-click access to news, video, stocks, and your Hotmail inbox. You can

Prior to the release of Windows 7, Microsoft were getting all sorts of headaches from the EU, the antitrust case was sparked off by Opera in December 2007, saying that Microsoft was shielding Internet Explorer from real competition by bundling it with every version of Windows. So to make things fair, the commissioner wanted the consumers to decide what browser they installed.

Microsoft agreed to this Ballot Screen in July as a way to resolve the case. It would present consumers with a windowshowing, IE, Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari. The user could then choose which browser they wanted installed on their system. Originally the browsers were to be displayed in alphabetical order, but last month, Opera, Mozilla and Google all submitted change requests.

Now it appears that the browser ballot screen will display the browsers in a random order every time. The ballot screen was originally intended to be displayed in Internet Explorer, but now it seems Microsoft will be displaying it as its own application. So now , the top five browsers — IE, Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Apple’s Safari — will appear in random order each time the ballot is displayed.

Google has begun its big push to bring extension support to its Chrome web browser. Currently, it’s accepting extensions from developers that it will be placing in some sort of gallery to launch at a later date. Last week, we showed the nice, new Aviary extension for Chrome. Today, we get very popular Firefox extension that is now Chrome-ready, Shareaholic.

As we noted in September when Shareaholic closed its seed funding, the extension has surpassed over 1 million downloads for Firefox. And for good reason: It makes sharing on just about every service on the web as simple as two-clicks. The new Chrome version works pretty much exactly the same as the Firefox version; you click the button and you are presented with a drop down list of social options for sharing. A shortened URL is automatically made for the webpage you are sending.

If you have a Shareaholic account you can set options for the extension including picking and choosing which social networks to include in the drop-down. You can also pick which URL shortener to use (Bit.ly is the default one). But you don’t have to have a Shareaholic account to use the extension, it will simply use the default sharing options (such as Twitter, Facebook, Delicious, etc) to populate your drop-down.

The extension is fast, and thankfully, does not seem to slow down Chrome at all. Obviously, extension support is a big key to Chrome competing with Firefox, the browser known for its extensions. And this simple extension support also gives Chrome a huge leg up over the top dog of the browsers, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.

Shareaholic’s extension, which is technically still is beta, is accessible through this direct link. Once you download it, simply drag it into your Chrome (version 4.0 or greater, which is still testing) browser window to install it. One note: It’s not working correctly with the latest dev build of Chrome for Mac, but it is working in the latest Chromium builds for Mac. Chrome for Mac’s beta launch is imminent, but Google has stated that extension support will not be in that build right away.

Shareaholic noted that the team at Google helped them port the extension over to Chrome. Clearly, they want to have the best extensions available early.
